When it comes to gender selection, there are a few important factors that help us identify which treatment method will be more suitable for your unique needs. These factors include the following:

– Age of the female patient: Female patient’s age is very important due to a number of reasons. First of all, as age gets older, the ovarian reserves tend to diminish at an increasing rate. Secondly, with increased age, genetic problems become more common, which increases the likelihood of genetic defects in children.

– Semen analysis results for the male patient: At North Cyprus IVF, we have a number of gender selection alternatives, and one of these is known as MicroSort, a sperm sorting technology, which can successfully sort the specimen into X and Y bearing cells. This technology can only be used for patients whose sperm concentration is higher than 70 million/ml, therefore, it is important to know about the sperm parameters prior to identifying the methods that will be employed in treatment.

– Hormone levels for the female patient: Hormone levels indicate the level of ovarian reserves as well as the quality of oocytes remaining in the reserves. This information helps us make a more effective assessment of your needs and carefully identify the right medication regimen.

Based on this information, we will be able to identify the right mode of treatment, which is suitable for you.

Gender Selection is offered in a few alternative methods at North Cyprus IVF:

1) MicroSort IUI for Gender Selection
This treatment method is mostly suitable for fertile couples in their 20s, where the female patient’s ovarian reserves are still very well intact and a well response can be obtained with a very mild stimulation cycle. The male partner’s sperm count, concentration, motility and morphology are also very important when determining whether the sperm will be an ideal candidate for the MicroSort procedure or not. If both patients satisfy these requirements, then they are admitted into our MicroSort IUI program.

MicroSort IUI works very much like regular IUI, where the female patient receives a very mild stimulation medication to produce multiple oocytes in order to increase the chances of pregnancy at the time of insemination. The MicroSorted sperm is injected intra-uterine in order to achieve pregnancy.

MicroSort for gender selection with IUI treatment has 90% accuracy for gender selection for a girl and 75% accuracy for gender selection for a boy. In other words, when the sperm goes through the MicroSort equipment, the specimen is sorted into X and Y bearing cells with a 75-90% precision depending on the desired sex. Regarding success rates, MicroSort IUI has similar success rates to IUI treatment success rates, which is about 20-25% for women younger than 35 years of age, and about 8-10% for women older than 35 years of age. It should be kept in mind that MicroSort IUI may need several attempts before pregnancy can be achieved.

2) MicroSort IVF for Gender Selection
This treatment option is more like regular IVF-ICSI treatment. The male partner’s sperm is sorted into X and Y bearing cells for gender selection, just like in the IUI option. However, as opposed to injecting the sorted sperm trans-uterine, female partner’s eggs are taken out and the sperm is injected directly into the nucleus of the egg for fertilization. In other words, IVF+ICSI does not let nature take its course, but rather, does the job in the lab environment.

IVF treatment requires that the female partner uses stimulation medication in order to produce a higher count and quality of eggs in a given menstrual cycle. It is through this medication protocol that we are able to obtain a higher count of eggs in order to increase your chances of pregnancy.

Accuracy for gender selection is still around 75% for a boy and 90% for a girl. However, pregnancy rates are considerably higher than IUI since IVF procedures allow for multiple eggs to be fertilized and transferred back into the uterus.

3) IVF with PGD for Gender Selection
Alternatively, there is Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (Screening) which is a genetic testing procedure, done once the embryos are created. This method is most suitable for patients with a standard to optimal level of fertility, which are usually females within the 20-35 age group. With a good ovarian response to IVF stimulation, an optimal number of eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and these eggs are fertilized using the partner’s sperm sample.

PGD allows us to identify the gender with 99.9% accuracy as well as screening for most common genetic disorders, making sure your baby does not possess a serious genetic condition. This method is a bit more expensive compared to MicroSort IVF but is more accurate. Gender selection through PGD works just like conventional IVF, where eggs and sperm are fertilized in the laboratory environment. Then, embryos are placed in an incubator for optimal growth. Once the embryos reach the 8-cell growth stage (usually day 3 after fertilization), biopsy is performed where a single cell is retrieved from each embryo for diagnosis. This biopsy allows us to test for certain genetic conditions and determine the sex. Apart from the sex of the baby, we test chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18 and 21, which are the causes of almost 90% of all genetic-linked abnormalities.

Success rates with this option can be as high as 80% with a good ovarian reserve and an optimal response to IVF medication stimulation.

4) MicroSort IVF with PGD for Gender Selection
Combining MicroSort and PGD is the best gender selection method there is, espectially for patients older than 35 years of age, with limited ovarian reserves, and is only offered at our clinic in Northern Cyprus. This method combines the benefits of both MicroSort and PGD technologies in an optimal manner. MicroSorting makes sure that majority of the sperm is sorted into the cells that will produce appropriate gender. PGD will further provide increased accuracy for gender selection and provide a gender selection accuracy of 99.9% while also allowing us to screen your embryos for majority of genetic diseases.

*It should be kept in mind that in order for the MicroSort procedure to work effectively, the male partner needs to have at least 70 million/ml motile sperm in the ejaculate, otherwise, we may not have enough sperm for the sorting procedure.

** We are also able to test embryos for all chromosome defects if you would like a more thorough genetic testing rather than the standard test. Regular PGD testing tests 5 chromosomes. Testing for all chromosomes is also possible at a cost of 200 Euros in addition to the standard PGD cost.
